Worship is central to our lives and all that we do at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church. We welcome and encourage you to join us as we praise the God who created us, gives us new life in Christ, and is with us through the power of the Holy Spirit.
At the center of our faith stands the Word of God. We believe, teach and preach from this dynamic revelation of God’s presence with us – ancient words for a contemporary age. In our community of faith the Scriptures are understood as the authoritative Word from God and the interpreted Word for a changing, questioning, hungering world.
Entrance into the community of faith comes as it has throughout the ages, through the cleansing bath of Holy Baptism. In the center of our worship stands a filled font, into which water is poured with each baptismal remembrance. Like the bloodlines that unite relatives, we believe that the “waterlines” of this sacrament bind us together in a community of faith with both gifts and responsibilities for those who would follow Jesus.
Holy Communion is celebrated at every service, every Sunday. We welcome all who believe in the power of the Risen Christ and who find in the sacrament our Lord’s presence for the forgiveness of sins and the renewal of life. While our communion celebrations vary according to service and season, they are always reverent, inclusive, and grounded in the hope of Christ that the Scriptures promise.
In our worship life together hundreds of volunteers offer their gifts each month to contribute to services that most regard as formal and traditional. While the obvious way to participate is simply by being present to offer your voice in worship, praise, and prayer, there are countless opportunities for particular service as well. Well over fifty per cent of our worshiping congregation offer themselves back as a gift to God by singing or ringing in one or more of our eight choirs. Others read a lesson, serve as an usher, assist in leading worship, set up and serve communion, open or close the building, greet people, or light the candles and collect the offering. There is a place for you and your unique gifts.
As a source of Sunday evening spiritual refreshment, Evening Prayer is offered to the community each Sunday evening at 7 p.m. Style of worship and attendance varies widely – sometimes there are 5 people, sometimes 100. Communion is served as Evening Prayer concludes and then the leader offers individual healing prayers in a one-on-one conversation that includes anointing if the worshiper so desires. Evening Prayer on Sundays at 7 offers a wonderful way to conclude the weekend or to set the tone for the beginning of a new week, depending on your perspective. If you’ve been out-of-town for a summer fling or a winter ski trip, offering your worship and praise on Sundays at 7 is a great option for you.
