The crucifer and candles are brought into the
sanctuary for services.
The panel and crucifer were carved by Ernst
Schwidder+,
who also was the artist who created the altar and pulpit.

+ERNST SCHWIDDER, former art professor
at SPU (1964-67), Ernst attended Concordia Academy in Portland, Oregon, and
received both his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of
Washington. He accepted administrative and teaching responsibilities on the
faculty of the Art Department at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma
after having served similarly at Valparaiso University and Seattle Pacific.
An important American Christian artist, Ernst was a major contributor to
the Art Department at SPU, with the fruits of his work still evident in the
curriculum today and founding chairman of the Department of Art at
Valparaiso University. Ernst served in a variety of capacities, including
cantor/deacon and congregational president, at his home church, Grace
Lutheran in Tacoma. Professor Schwidder died June 2, 1998, in Seattle. He
was 66. He is survived by his wife, Maggie, and three children.
